Material Transfer Activities
In order to enhance campus research and to increase research collaboration with industry and other academic institutions, UC Merced encourages the transfer of biological and other research materials to and from our campus. With these collaborations, research at UC Merced and in cooperating organizations can be expanded to benefit the public.
Before proprietary or valuable material changes hands, however, a transfer agreement must be in place. This is to ensure the rights of both parties are protected and that there is agreement up front on subsequent use, care and further distribution. The UC Merced Sponsored Projects Office (SPO) and Office of Technology Transfer (OTT) are the organizations on campus with the responsibility for helping researchers negotiate and approve these agreements on behalf of UC Merced. Transfer agreements among and between UC campuses and national labs can be used to clarify use, but they are not legally required since the Regents own the materials from all 13 UC campuses/facilities.
The following is a brief description of how outgoing and incoming transfers are carried out.
Outgoing Material Transfers:
For more information or assistance in negotiating outgoing material transfer agreements, contact Rich Miller. He can be reached at rmiller4@ucmerced.edu or by telephone at (209) 228-4341.

The following is a brief description of how outgoing and incoming transfers are carried out.
Outgoing Material Transfers:
- Advise requesting party to visit the UC Merced OTT Material Transfer Web page, containing all forms and instructions needed for making the transfer
- Requesting party completes all necessary paperwork and submits it to OTT
- Once all paperwork is completed, OTT will alert you that the transfer can be made
- OTT endeavors to provide 24 to 48 hour turnaround for those outgoing agreements where little or no negotiation is required.
- Incoming Material Transfer Agreements must be sent to UC Merced Sponsored Projects Office (SPO) for review and for processing
- Each agreement requires the signature of a UC Merced authorized official within SPO
- Mail originals, drop them off at SPO or send Material Transfer Agreements as an electronic attachment to spo@ucmerced.edu
- Include a completed State of California, 700-U form with your packet of information. This form can be found on the Sponsored Projects Office website under Required Forms.
Note: Incoming material transfer agreements from companies with highly proprietary material may take more time and require special concessions. In some circumstances a special Acceptance Agreement may be required of the recipient investigator whereby they accept certain risks inherent in the agreement. UC Merced may not be able to accept the terms from all companies.
