The Research Computing Facility, named the Borg Cube, is a 1,448 square foot pre-manufactured, self-contained, fully serviceable data center-style building designed exclusively for computational research support at UC Merced. This brand-new computational research facility built as a part of Project 2020 provides redundant power and cooling to enable computational research continuity.
UC Merced’s primary Supercomputing Cluster, the MERCED cluster has over 3000 processing units which means researchers can run over 7.2 trillion calculations per second - which is over 1500 times the number of calculations per second per core than a typical laptop can perform. One can store over 370 TBs of data on the MERCED cluster - which is about 370 times more data that can be stored on a typical laptop today.
