Merced Vernal Pools and Grasslands Reserve

Walking Tour Details:

Come join Reserve Naturalists for a walk to the UC Merced Vernal Pools and Grassland Reserve to learn about research and education happening on the Reserve and about the Reserve's unique vernal pool and grassland ecosystems. The 6,500-acre Natural Reserve is right next to campus (about a 20 minute walk). Come observe birds, mammals, and plants and see the vernal pools in spring! Coyotes and brush rabbits are often spotted. A golden eagle and burrowing owl may even be seen. Bring a water bottle, camera, binoculars, hat, sunscreen, and good walking shoes. Limited to 25, open to all.

Notes:

1. Dairy cows graze on the reserve. They are peaceful, but curious.
2. There are no bathrooms on the reserve. This is open country with no bushes. A few windmills and large water tanks do provide a bit of privacy. Everyone should use campus bathrooms near the parking lot before heading out. Try to avoid drinking too much coffee!
3. All participants must remain with the group for the entire field trip (1:00 pm-2:30 pm or 2:30 pm-4:00 pm).
